If you purchased your phone from someone other than us, you can follow these steps to manually point it at the Press8 provisioning server.
Before you start, check which phone you have. The model name is printed on the front or on the label on the back of the phone. The settings are different for Poly/Polycom VVX phones than for the older Polycom SoundPoint IP phones, and using the wrong ones will stop the phone from picking up its configuration. To check your firmware version, go to Menu/Status/Platform/Application/Main. If you are not sure which group your phone falls into, call Press8 technical support before you begin.
Your Press8 technician will give you three things for these steps: your server address, your server user name and your server password. Please have them to hand before you factory reset the phone.
Poly / Polycom VVX phones
This covers the VVX 150, 250, 300, 301, 310, 311, 350, 400, 401, 410, 411, 450, 500, 501, 600 and 601.
1. Reset the phone to factory settings.
Press the Menu (or Home) button, then select Settings / Advanced / Admin Settings / Reset to Defaults / Reset to Factory. You will be asked for the administrator password:
- If the phone has never been set up on the Press8 system, use the Polycom factory default password 456.
- If the phone has been on the Press8 system before, use 456456.
If you cannot get into the menu at all, unplug the phone, then plug it back in and hold the 1, 3 and 5 keys together while it boots, until it asks for a password. On some VVX 300-series units the combination is 1, 3, 5 and 7 together. Enter 456 when prompted.
2. Catch the setup menu during the reboot.
While the phone restarts, watch for the countdown screen and press ‘Cancel’, then ‘Setup’. Some models simply show ‘Setup’. Enter the administrator password when asked.
3. Enter the provisioning server settings.
Select the provisioning server menu item, then scroll down to each of the following and enter the values below:
- Server Type: HTTPS
- Server Address: p.press8.com/p_XXXXXXXX — where p_XXXXXXXX is the account reference your Press8 technician gives you. It is specific to your company, so please use the one we give you rather than copying it from elsewhere.
- Server User and Server Password: your Press8 technician will give you these.
Use the number keys for letters and numbers by toggling what the buttons do with the ‘a->1A’ soft key at the bottom of the screen, then press OK. (Hint: the period or dot character is the star key in the lower case alpha mode, and the underscore is the # key pressed 4 times. The / character is in the punctuation set — if you cannot find it on your model, call Press8 support and we will talk you through it.)
4. Save.
Exit this sub-menu, then exit the next menu and press Save Configuration. The phone will reboot itself and pull down its configuration.
Polycom SoundPoint IP phones
This covers the older SoundPoint IP range, including the SoundPoint IP 321, 330, 331, 335, 450, 550, 560 and 650.
These models are older than our secure provisioning service and cannot use it, so they still use FTP. If you are installing one of these, please contact Press8 first — in most cases we would rather move you onto a newer handset than set an old one up again.
1. Reset the phone to factory settings.
Press the Menu button, then Settings / Advanced (enter password 456) / Administrative settings / Reset to defaults. If “Reset to factory” is not shown, reset the device settings and the config settings before proceeding.
If the password does not work, perform a factory reset from the keypad while the phone boots:
- SoundPoint IP 321, 330, 331, 335 and 450: hold 1, 3, 5 and 7 together.
- SoundPoint IP 550, 560 and 650: hold 4, 6, 8 and * together.
When prompted for a password, enter 456. Some older units ask for the phone’s MAC address instead — this is printed on the label on the back of the phone and begins with 0004f2.
2. Catch the setup menu during the reboot.
While the phone restarts, watch for the countdown screen and press ‘Setup’. Enter 456 for the password.
3. Enter the server settings.
Scroll down to Server Menu and press ‘Select’, then set:
- Server Type: FTP
- Server Address: p.press8.com
- Server User and Server Password: your Press8 technician will give you these.

4. Save.
Exit this sub-menu, then exit the next menu and press Save Configuration. The phone will reboot itself.
Call Press8 technical support if you receive any errors on the reboot, or if the phone reboots but does not show your extension.
